Mexican Vacations: Planning the Perfect Date to Travel

Mexican vacations are one of the most popular travel destinations for American travelers. Seasonality plays a major role in prices and your experience, and here's how to best plan your trip.

Planning a vacation is always hard, because it’s a matter of figuring out when the most affordable time is for you to travel, as well as when the best chance is for tourism opportunities once there.  You really never want to plan any type of major trip without being prepared for this, so it’s really important that you look up this sort of information before going.  You have to plan around things like holidays, as well as peak travel periods for the area, so that you can find the best possible prices otherwise.

With most Mexican vacations, you’re going to want to think about four different factors concerning when is going to be the right time to pick your travel date.  This is really important, so that you can ensure that you’re going to be visiting Mexico at a time that you’re going to be able to enjoy yourself.   Choosing the wrong date can get you overcrowded beaches, or just overpriced expenses.  With just a little effort on your part, you can be sure that your all inclusive vacation packages go perfectly.

1) Know your holidays.

Whether you want to travel on them or around them, it’s important that you know the most popular Mexican holidays before you go.  The most important ones to look out for include the Day of the Dead, Independence Day as well as Cinco de Mayo and Christmas.  The Day of the Dead takes place on the first of November, and is one of Mexico’s most legendary holidays because of how it is celebrated.  On this day you’ll find that practically the entire populace marches throughout the area in special masks and makeup, in celebration of loved ones lost.  In fact, you can see the spectacular shrines for weeks in advance.

Independence Day takes place on September 16th and is a day that much like in America, is all about Mexico’s first foray into becoming it’s own independent nation, so you can see maximum national pride on display.  Cinco de Mayo is to celebrate Mexico’s very unlikely victory against the French many years back, and is a similar national pride holiday.  These can be great days to see the country in full force, or days to avoid if you want a quiet vacation.

2) Be aware that many people take domestic vacations around the same time.

Something that you don’t really get in America, that many other types of countries experience, is taking vacation around the same types of dates.  In fact, most of Mexico practically shuts down around the same period during Christmas time as well as in August when everybody is out exploring the beaches.  That means you want to time your vacation right to either see the sights undisturbed by the locals who have gone on vacation.  Or you want to use this time to avoid the beaches until the vacation season calms down, so that you don’t have to worry about crowds.

3) The weather can also play a pretty big role in your vacation habits.

You want to ensure that you’re visiting Mexico at the right time to be able to enjoy the weather as much as possible.  Essentially this means avoiding the rainy and hurricane seasons, which both take place at about the same time.  Throughout the same period of summer, you’ll find that the heavy rain will kick in, in addition to major hurricane risk storms, and you definitely want to save your beach time for a different season.  Instead, focus on fall or winter time, where Mexico is still fantastically warm, but the beaches are totally safe.

4) Be aware of seasonal rates as well.

Just as there are periods of time where the local people are more likely to be vacationing, you can experience the same tourism rate hikes.  When everyone is visiting the beaches en masse, you’re going to find that this means the prices are going to be hiked by quite a bit more than their normal amount.  That means there are certain activities you want to avoid that are specific to season, so that you can be sure that you’re able to avoid those prices.  Moreover, in the popular travel times in which tourism is rife in Mexico, it’s also a good idea to avoid Mexican vacations sometimes, just because hotel accommodations, as well as travel and entertainment all feature a massive hike in price.
